About Us
We are all in this together – and we are glad you are visiting our site. This is our online meeting place, where we organize our activities, share ideas, and publicize our mission. Belize is a country on the northeastern coast of Central America. It is the only country in the area that has English as its official language. Belize is bordered on the north by Mexico, to the south and west by Guatemala, and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. Its mainland is about 290 km (180 mi) long and 110 km (68 mi) wide. With 22,800 square kilometres (8,800 sq mi) of land and a population of only 334,297 (2013 est.), Belize has the lowest population density in Central America. Belize's abundance of terrestrial and marine species and its diversity of ecosystems give it a key place in the globally significant Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. Orchids are among the most hauntingly beautiful of all flowers. They speak to us of tropical earthly paradises dripping with exotic splendour, but surprisingly they grow in a wide range of habitats from the colder reaches of the sub-Arctic to the tropical forests of the southern hemisphere! They are found everywhere from the edges of deserts to humid rainforests and have a preference for tropical mountain ranges such as the gem of gems, BELIZE!

Our Mission
Our Mission is to protect the floral biodiversity of Belize by existing as an information resource for the community through identification, outreach & science through the University of Belize and also to promote conservation and preservation of these magnificent plants! Our green houses are also a place of beauty for all visitors to enjoy. We also aim to cultivate, promote, research and enable the research of tropical flora and its conservation with an emphasis on our native species and their habitats. The Orchid or "Orchidaceae" is a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants with blooms that are often colourful and often fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family.
Our Work
Belize is a member of CITES , an international agreement to protect plant and animal species in danger of extinction through international trade. Orchids are protected under CITES and that makes it illegal to remove orchids from the country of Belize without a permit.
Do your part for orchid conservation and do not collect orchids (or other plants or animals) unless you have a valid reason and have obtained the proper permits. If you purchase an orchid make sure it comes from a cultivated collection and was not taken from the wild. Just like the Belize Botanical Garden (which this was taken from) The University of Belize Orchid Society does not participate in selling native orchids. Our collection is mainly for educational and research purpose.
